Mini-Mate is a "Corona Discharge" device.
These particle electrostatic effects are well known and universally accepted by aerosol scientists and do not depend on the virulence or toxicity of particles as they have not been breathed in yet, have not been characterised as a disease or medical condition of the body.
 
Corona Discharge is entirely safe and has been used as an effective means of purification for decades by the military and in industry. Corona discharge technology has been used by the military, to destroy toxic biological and nerve agents in the field and in laboratories, and in industry manufacturing "clean rooms" for years. 

Most people think the Mini-Mate is an ioniser but an ioniser uses electrostatic precipitation to negatively charge particles.

Although a corona discharge device has an ionisation effect internally, it uses an electronic plasma incineration, similar to a lightning strike, to destroy airborne contaminants.

Corona discharge is creates the equivalent of an electronic arc in the air making it able to destroy many more airborne contaminants than traditional ionisation.  

The negative ions which are generated internally are neutralised by the neutral grid of the Mini-Mate before the purified air is emitted to the users face.

Minimate is not a "medical" product but it has been conclusively shown to lower the risk of inhalation of toxic particles by decreasing the breathing zone concentrations substantially.
